Counted Cross stitch
Dimensions design by Don Maitz
12"X14" on 18count black Aida
42 colours (56 if you count combined colours) including some dreaded metallic.

This one took me a year, but was well worth it. Several years ago I followed a friend that cross stitched into Michael's and saw this piece and decided then and there that I wanted to try cross stitch. I was, however; smart enough to know that this was not a wise one to start with and have since become completely enamoured with the craft.
On a side note, it's not black on black that will get you, it's the combined colours of blue-black and charcoal on black that will drive you round the bend.

Update for :iconstitchingpirates: Pirate Pride contest which asks for your favourite piece, this won out over a couple of others, including one I designed myself, because of what it means to me, as this is what started my love of the craft. Still, it is one of the more difficult pieces I have done, I like stitching on black but I had to buy a book light to help with this one.
Also I learned an interesting thing about framing on this.  I asked at Michael's (before I finished it) approximately how much it would cost to frame properly and was quoted $450 dollars, but they quickly mentioned that 1/2 off coupons are readily available, making it $225ish. So when finished an prepping for the fair, I tried a local framer rumored to be very expensive but really good with needlework.  His quote (with a slightly apologetic air, he knew he was supposed to be pricey) was $170 including stretching. you can guess where I went, and still go when I need my work professionally framed.

I learned over the years that I can only do smaller projects.. Oh the patterns and kits that I would buy. Only to never finish them. I am not very patient so I don't know what I was thinking. But I had some complex ones too... just like this. But I never finished them. This came out beautiful. I know this had to be time consuming and complicated. People who have never done this... have no clue.
I finished smaller stuff, but framed those myself.. Something that you put so much time and effort in would have be done by a professional. Looks like you have made all kinds of beautiful things in your gallery. Wonderful work!
